A new study finds that some Viagra-based medicines that have been banned in Australia have actually been sold over the counter.
Researchers found that the blue diamond-shaped pill contained a potent substance that made it difficult to treat erectile dysfunction, which is a common problem affecting men over 40.
Viagra-based medicines, known as PDE5 inhibitors, are used for treating erectile dysfunction. They are available only with a prescription, which is not always the case with other medicines, such as sildenafil.
But the new study looked at the safety of three Viagra-based drugs, including sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. The study found that Viagra-based medicines, such as sildenafil and tadalafil, were more likely to cause side effects than the other drugs, including nitrate-based medicines.
“We found that those three medicines were significantly more likely to have been linked to serious adverse events in patients using Viagra-based medicines, including an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, liver damage, and death,” said lead researcher Dr. John R. Williams, a from Perth, who led the study.
“These adverse events, in particular, are a significant cause of concern for many Australian men, and it’s important to note that the risks and associated benefits of these medicines are substantial.”
Viagra-based medicines are known for treating erectile dysfunction, but there are currently no approved treatments for erectile dysfunction.
The study looked at 4,226 men who were age 18-40 in Australia. Of those, one-fifth of the men were taking Viagra-based medicines.
Of the 4,226 men, 16.4% of the men were taking sildenafil. The other 4.1% of the men were taking tadalafil.
Viagra-based medicines are sold as a generic version of the drug sildenafil, which is also sold as the brand-name Viagra®.
However, the study found that men who took one of these medicines had a substantially higher incidence of adverse events in comparison with men who were not taking the drug.
For example, the study found that men who took sildenafil had a greater rate of heart attack and stroke than men who were not taking the drug.
In addition, sildenafil had fewer adverse events than tadalafil, and it was also associated with fewer cardiovascular events.
In contrast to tadalafil, which is sold as the brand-name Viagra®, sildenafil is sold as the generic version of the drug.
“There is also some evidence that the generic Viagra (sildenafil) is not as safe as the branded Viagra (tadalafil) in terms of safety and efficacy,” said Williams. “The data suggests that there may be a risk of a greater than 10-fold higher risk of cardiovascular events in the generic form.”
Men who take these medicines should consult their doctor before taking any of the medicines. If a man has erectile dysfunction, he should seek medical attention.
“If you think you have erectile dysfunction, you should seek medical attention right away,” said Williams.

“In Australia, men who take certain other drugs should not use Viagra-based medicines,” the spokesperson added. “Viagra-based medicines are available only with a prescription.”
According to Pfizer Australia, sildenafil and tadalafil are the only medicines that are approved for recreational use.
However, the Australian Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (AMHP) is currently investigating a link between the use of sildenafil and serious side effects, including cardiac events.

The new drugs are being evaluated in Hawaii for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. PAH is caused by the narrowing of the arteries in the lungs and the narrowing of the blood vessels supplying the lungs. This narrowing is found in the vessels of the lungs that supply the lungs and the heart. In this study, we observed that the efficacy of sildenafil and tadalafil was superior to other drugs for the treatment of PAH. In addition, these drugs are being studied for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
